NHRC's 'Open hearing' at Manav Adhikar Bhawan on atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes pertaining to Meerut Division.

New Delhi, 12th December, 2013

The Commission held an open hearing on 26-27 November, 2013 of cases of atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the problems being faced by them. In continuation, another open hearing was scheduled to be held at Meerut. Since number of complaints received from the Meerut Division was not very high, the Commission decided to hold the open hearing at its office at Manav Adhikar Bhawan, New Delhi.

The Commission had issued a public notice calling for complaints of atrocities by public servant or of negligence by a public servant in prevention of atrocities from the persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes residing in the Meerut Division comprising of Bullandshahr. Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad and Meerut districts. The Commission after due consideration, has decided to take up 33 cases during the Open Hearing to be held in its office at Manav Adhikar Bhawan, New Delhi on 13th December, 2013. The complaints mainly comprise of atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, Bonded Labour, atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes by police, inaction by the Central/State Govt. officials etc.

The Open Hearing will start at Commission's office at Manav Adhikar Bhawan, 'C' Block, GPO Complex, INA, New Delhi on 13.12.2013 at 10.30 A.M.

Prior to this, the Commission has held six open hearings of complaints on atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Nagpur (Maharashtra) and Varanasi (U.P.). The Commission has decided to hold such open hearings to reach out to the persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and hear their complaints about violations of their rights by the public authorities. The decision is based on the recommendations given by Mr. K.B. Saxena, IAS (Retd.) in his report, commissioned by the NHRC, on the continuing problems faced by the Scheduled Castes.
