CURTAIN RAISER: NHRC Workshop on Role of Media in Promotion and Protection of Human Rights at NLSIU Bangalore, Karnataka on 22nd June, 2017 (20.06.2017)

The National Human Rights Commission, India, under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, has the mandate to spread human rights literacy among various sections of society and promote awareness of the safeguards available for the protection of these rights through publications, the media, seminars and workshops. The Commission has always held media as its equal partner in promotion and protection of human rights.
In view of its mandate to promote awareness about human rights and their protection mechanism in the country, the Commission is organising a workshop in collaboration with National Law School of India University, Bangalore, Karnataka on the 'Role of Media in Promotion and Protection of Human Rights' at National Law School of India University, Bangalore, Karnataka on Thursday, 22nd June, 2017.
Mr. Justice H.L. Dattu, Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission will inaugurate the Workshop which will start at 10.00 a.m. and conclude by 02:00 p.m.
The objective of the workshop is to bring at one forum media persons, jurists, members of legal fraternity, academicians, students and other stake holders to understand, appreciate and discuss the whole gamut of issues about the role and impact of media in promotion and protection of human rights and also the freedom of speech with focus on social media in the backdrop of concerns relating to human rights.
The workshop will be addressed by several other prominent speakers including, among others, Justice Shri D. Murugesan, Member, NHRC, Mrs. Meera C. Saksena, Acting Chairperson, Karnataka SHRC, Prof. (Dr.) R. Venkata Rao, Vice Chancellor, NLU, Shri Shekhar Gupta, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, Printline Media Pvt. Ltd. Shri Sanjay R. Hegde, Sr. Advocate Supreme Court of India, Prof. Manoj Chakravarti, IIM, Bangalore, Prof. (Dr.) V.S. Mallar and Dr. V.
