Japanese delegation of lawyers and human rights activists visits NHRC, India (08.02.2019)



New Delhi, 8th February, 2019

A thirteen member Japanese delegation of lawyers and human rights activists accompanied by the representatives of Bar Association of India visited NHRC, India in Delhi today. They met Mrs. Jyotika Kalra, Member, NHRC and senior officers to have an understanding of the functioning of the Commission in pursuance of its mandate for the promotion and protection human rights.

During the course of interaction, the visiting delegates said that Japan does not have a Human Rights Institution like NHRC, India, though they have been demanding for the same for long. Their association of lawyers and human rights activist, through an internal mechanism, takes up the issues of human rights with the system of governance in their country. In addition to the research and training programmes of the NHRC, India, they showed keen interest in the disposal of complaints of human rights violation and investigation related to them. The compliance of most of the recommendations of the Commission by the governments was also noted by them.

The delegation is visiting India in connection with the Law Asia Human Rights Conference, which is being organized in association with the Bar Association of India in New Delhi from the 9th-10th February.
