NHRC notice to the Director General of Prisons, Haryana over the reported suicide by a prisoner in Bhondsi Jail (26.04.2019)

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report thata 24-year-old inmate lodged in Bhondsi Jail of Gurugram, Haryana, allegedly, committed suicide by hanging himself inside the washroom of the jail on the 25th April, 2019.

It has issued a notice to the Director General of Prisons, Haryana calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks.

Issuing the notice, the Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amount to violation of the Right to Life of the prisoner while in the custody of the State. The Commission has also observed that despite its guidelines, it has not received any intimation from the Jail or the State authorities regarding this custodial death.
