CURTAIN RAISER: NHRC's Open Hearing and Camp Sitting at Bengaluru for the cases of Karnataka, from 2nd - 3rd August, 2018 (01.08.2018)

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC will be holding two days 'Open Hearing and Camp Sitting' in order to address the grievances of the people speedily at Karnataka, Bengaluru on the 2nd - 3rd August, 2018.

Mr. Justice H. L. Dattu, Chairperson, NHRC will inaugurate it at Vikas Soudha, Doctor Ambedkar Veedhi, Sampangi Rama Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka at 10.00 am on the 2nd August, 2018. Besides the hearing of the cases, the Government officers will also be sensitized about the issues concerning human rights.

After the inauguration, the Commission will take up 183 cases in the 'Open Hearing' which will be heard by the Chairperson, Mr. Justice H.L. Dattu, Members, Mr. Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Mr. Justice D. Murugesan and Mrs. Jyotika Kalra. These relate to the grievances and complaints of atrocities against the persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities due to action, inaction or omission by the public authorities.

Apart from the complaints received in response to the public notices, the Commission has also decided to take up some of the cases of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes victims, already under consideration of the Commission in the Open Hearing. The authorities concerned have been asked to remain present at the time of hearing of these cases.

On the 3rd August, 2018, the second and the concluding day of the programme, 14 important cases will be taken up in the sitting of Full Commission in the 'Camp Sitting.' These include cases of rehabilitation of more than 400 slave farmers rescued between 2011-2016, illegal quarrying and excavation work at Vadera Basapur Village and other adjoining villages in Mandya District of Karnataka, supply of contaminated water by the Gram Panchayat at Maidolalu village in Bhadravati taluk of Shivamogga district etc.

The Commission will hold a meeting with NGOs & HRDs/Transgenders between 11.00 and 12.00 Noon followed by discussion with the Chief Secretary, DGP, DMs, SPs and other senior civil, police and jail officers of the Sate on the issues raised by the NGOs and media persons at Vikas Soudha, Doctor Ambedkar Veedhi, Sampangi Rama Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka from 12.00 Noon - 12.45 pm.

Later on, the Chairperson and Members will brief the media about the outcome of the Open Hearing/Camp Sitting as well as discussions with the NGOs and senior officers of the State Government for wider dissemination of information on the human rights issues and action taken by the NHRC for their protection and promotion.

So far, the Commission has held its Camp Sitting/Open Hearings in the States of Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajsathan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh for the States of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and UTs of Chandigarh and Poducherry.

Besides this, the Commission also organized one Regional Public Hearing on Right to Health Care in collaboration with the Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA) at Mumbai on 6th -7th January, 2016 for States of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Goa and Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
