3. Death of inmate's baby in Panna Jail
The Commission has issued notice to IG (Prisons) Madhya Pradesh on the reported death of an inmate's baby at Panna Jail, which was carried in a national daily dated 4 October 2004.
Taking suo-motu cognizance the Chairperson of the Commission Dr. Justice A.S.Anand observed that if the allegations contained in the newspaper report are true, it exposes the pitiable conditions of medical facilities available in the jails and is a matter of grave concern. He has asked the IG (Prisons) to send a factual report within 2 weeks.
The news story reported that a six-month-old baby girl Gangabai, daughter of a female inmate Sajjo Bai, an under-trial prisoner who was lodged in the jail died on 3 October 2004 at Panna Sub-jail. It quoted the inmates of the jail as attributing the death to the apathy of the jail authorities and lack of proper medical facilities in the jail.
