4. Infants' death in Kolkata hospital

The Commission has directed the Secretary (Health), Government of India, the Secretary (Health), Government of West Bengal and Medical Superintendent, B.C. Roy Memorial Hospital, Kolkata to send a factual report within three weeks on the reported death of 4 children on 27 September 2004. The death of 4 infants at the B.C. Roy Memorial Hospital was reported in a section of the media on 28 September 2004.
The cause of the deaths was attributed to the sudden load shedding for two hours. The four infants had been kept in incubator but were removed from the incubator due to load shedding. The hospital authorities admitted the deaths and shifted the onus for disruption of supply of electricity on the Kolkata Electric Supply Corporation.
