5. Jhajjar married couple's plight
Ms. Brinda Karat, General Secretary, All India Democratic Women Association, had approached the Commission seeking its intervention in the case of a married couple Sonia and Rampal in Asandha village of Jhajjar District, Haryana who are being forced to declare themselves as brother and sister in the name of protection of 'gotra'. She further alleged that in spite of repeated representations to the authorities there have been no arrests of those guilty, no cases have been registered and the couple is unable to return to the village to reside.
Based on the complaint the Commission called upon the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Haryana as well as the Commissioner, Rohtak and SSP, Rohtak asking them to look into the allegations.
It also directed the Commissioner, Rohtak and SSP, Rohtak to inform the Commission on what steps they have taken to ensure the personal safety of Sonia and Rampal.
