5 year old boy severely tortured by police in U.P.; NHRC issues notice to SSP, Lucknow

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that in an alleged case of theft, a five year old boy was severely tortured by police in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

Reportedly, the boy, student of Class-I was picked up by the police personnel posted at Krishna Nagar Police Station on 2nd February, 2013 and was subjected to severe torture including electric shocks on his ears. The victim had some injuries in the back of his ear when he was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. However, the police denied the allegations and submitted that the victim was beaten up by public before being handed over to them. Seeing his condition the Board ordered for his immediate release on bail.

The Commission has observed that the contents of media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights and issued notice to SSP, Lucknow to submit a report within four weeks.
