A juvenile serious after torture by fellow inmates in Meerut Juvenile Home: NHRC issues notice to the UP Government (04.3.2014)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports about the torture of a juvenile by fellow inmates in the Reformatory House, Suraj Kund, Meerut. He was brutalized by them when he refused to take drugs and indulge in other nefarious activities. With the burn marks and injuries all over his body caused with sticks and belts, the boy had to be admitted in the Medical College Hospital in the city where his condition was reported to be serious.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the media reports, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of the victim and issued notice to the Government Uttar Pradesh, through its Chief Secretary, calling for a report within four weeks.

The media reports carried on the 13th January, 2014 were forwarded by a human rights activist requesting the Commission to intervene in the matter pertaining to the gross mismanagement of the Juvenile Home.
