A woman assaulted on suspicion of practicing witch craft in Chhattisgarh: NHRC issues notices to DM & SP, Korba (25.2.2014)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that an old woman, aged 65 years, was subjected to brutal beating and her head was also shaved as she was suspected to be practicing witch craft in district Korba, Chhattisgarh. The report was carried on the 15th February, 2014.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of women and issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Korba, Chhattisgarh calling for reports within two weeks.
The Superintendent of Police has also been directed to inform as to whether any case has been registered under Section 354(b) of the IPC in the matter.
