A woman delivers child in a queue of a government hospital in Chandigarh; NHRC issues notice to the Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), Union Territory Secretariat, Chandigarh

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that a lady delivered a child while standing in a queue of a Government Hospital in Chandigarh on the 21st July, 2010. Allegedly, the hospital authorities refused to admit her without the reports of certain tests. Even after the delivery, she was not given proper medical care, as a result, the child died immediately after the birth. The media report was carried on the 22nd July, 2010.
The Commission in its proceedings in the matter on the 26th July, 2010, observed that the contents of media report, if true, raise serious issue of violation of human rights, and issued a notice to the Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), Union Territory Secretariat, Chandigarh calling for a report in the matter within four weeks after the date of its receipt.
