A woman sells her three little daughters to buy food in West Bengal: NHRC issues notices to the DM and SP, South 24 Parganas


New Delhi, September 7th, 2012

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal to submit reports within four weeks into the allegations that a woman was forced to sell her three little daughters for Rs. 155/-, as they did not had food for some days.

The Commission observed that the media report, if true, raises a serious issue of violation of human rights to live with dignity.

The media carried report on the 3rd September, 2012. Allegedly, the woman named Purnima, wife of Uttam Haldar-a jobless daily wager, had to sell her daughters to buy food. All the three daughters were aged between 3 to 9 year.
