Abject poverty of Musahar community in Uttar Pradesh

Media carried report on the 4th September, 2010 alleging that the people belonging to the Musahar community in Rampur Block of Jaunpur District, Uttar Pradesh are living in abject poverty and they are on the verge of starvation. They have not been provided BPL cards nor single day's work for over a year, despite the fact that they have among them 27 MNREGS job card holders. They do not even have access to clean drinking water. The Commission on the 23rd September, 2010, observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise serious issue of human rights violation of these people and issued a notice to the District Magistrate, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh calling for a report in the matter.
