Alleged police torture damages an eye of a truck driver in Uttar Pradesh: NHRC issues notice to DIG Meerut


New Delhi, November 16th, 2012
The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to DIG, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on the basis of allegations made in a media report that beating of a truck driver by police officials of Jani Gang Nahar police station caused irreparable damage to one of his eyes. He has been asked to submit a report in the matter within four weeks alongwith a status report on the health of the victim.

According to the media report, carried on the 19th October, 2012, the police tortured Wahid, the truck driver, because he refused to pay the bribe to them. Later, he was admitted to a hospital in Meerut for treatment where the doctors opined that victim had lost vision in the injured eye.
