AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL DELEGATION VISITS NHRC
A delegation of Amnesty International comprising Mr. Bikramjeet Batra, Campaigner and Mr. Ramesh Gopalakrishnan, Researcher, South Asia team, Asia-Pacific Programme, visited the Commission on the 11th May, 2010.
They met NHRC Acting Chairperson, Mr. Justice G.P. Mathur, Member, Mr. Satyabrata Pal, Secretary General, Mr. K.S. Money, Jt. Secretary (P&A), Mr. J.P. Meena, and Director (Admn.), Dr. Sanjay Dubey, and discussed Amnesty International's report 'Don't Mine Us Out of Existence: Bauxite Mine and Refinery Devastate Lives in India.'
The report raises concern about the opening of a bauxite mine at Niyamgiri Hills, and expansion of an existing alumina refinery at nearby Lanjigarh in South-West Orissa. The report says these projects may lead to human rights violations and environmental damage.
