Assault on child labour: NHRC notice to Odisha and Karnataka Governments on allegations of migrant labourers' torture

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a brick kiln owner in District Gulbarga, Karnataka assaulted a child labourer with an iron rod so severely that he was in danger of losing his left hand while undergoing treatment at V.V.S. Medical College and Hospital. The 12 year old child labourer hails from District Bolangir, Odisha. The report has also highlighted the miseries of the other migrant labourers from Odisha in Karnataka into the hands of touts and brick kiln owners due to lack of effective action by the State authorities.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media reports, if true, raises serious human rights issues and issued notices to the Chief Secretaries of Government of Karnataka and Odisha calling for reports within two weeks.
