Boy loses eye sight in alleged police torture in Tamil Nadu: NHRC issues notices to the State DGP and DM, Madurai

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu and District Magistrate, Madurai to submit reports within four weeks into the allegations made in a media report that a boy lost sight of one eye due to torture by police in District Virudhunagar.

Allegedly, Pathampriyan, aged 14 years and a student of 9th class, was picked up by the police on the 24th September, 2012 from his residence, on allegation of theft at Kannagi Colony near Thiruthangal village in District Virudhunagar. Thereafter, he was beaten up by the police till he lost sight in his right eye. The boy belongs to Kuravar community. He is getting treatment in GRH, Madurai.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise the serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim.
