Camp Sitting in Odisha
The National Human Rights Commission organised a 'Camp Sitting', chaired by its Member, Shri S.C. Sinha at Bhubaneswar, Odisha from the 10th-12th November, 2014. Total 53 cases were taken up from different Districts of the State. These were related to various issues including, among others, issues of liquor shops, sexual assault on children in hostels and schools, siphoning-off scholarship money by government officials, engagement of only higher caste cooks for preparing Mid-Day Meal by Self-Help Groups, issuance of BPL/ AAY card to leprosy patients and allotting land to them, non-rehabilitation of released bonded labourers, shortage of lady officers for investigating cases related to women, not applying provisions of POCSOA & SC/ST (POA) Act even in grave crimes such as rape of SC/ST women, non-payment of compensation and rehabilitation package to people displaced by development of riverbed, shortage and absenteeism of doctors and para-medical staff in the Primary, Community and District Health Centres etc.
The Commission re-commended Rs. 5,30,000/- as monetary relief to the victims in three cases, issued Show-Cause Notices in eight cases, enhanced monetary relief in two cases.
The Commission also held a meeting with the representatives of NGOs and civil society on the 12th November, 2014. Later, it met with the Chief Secretary, DGP and Secretaries of different departments of the State Government and discussed various issues of human rights.
