Chairperson calls upon Medical Professionals to protect Human rights of patients

Mr. Justice J.S. Verma, Chairperson, NHRC has urged the members of the medical profession to adhere strictly to the Hippocratic oath as this will enable them to protect the human rights of patients and of people as a whole. He was speaking at a seminar in Bhopal on "Human Rights and the Medical Profession".

Calling the medical profession one of the noblest of vocations, since it deals directly with the right to life and physical and mental security, the Chairperson said that doctors can rely on the confidence people have in them and advise members of civil society to follow public health practices which can improve the conditions of citizens of the country. Quoting an incident of an AIDS patient, who was turned away recently by the hospital authorities in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, the Chairperson indicated that there was a great responsibility on the part of doctors to appreciate the human rights of AIDS patients and treat them sympathetically.
