Child slips in an open manhole and dies: NHRC issues notice to the Commissioner, SE Delhi Municipal Corporation(08.03.2014)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a four year old boy died after he slipped in an open manhole in Jaitpur, South-East Delhi on the 5th March, 2014. The body, however, could be fished out only the next morning after the rescue work by the police and the Fire Department personnel.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious violation of human rights of the child and issued a notice to the Commissioner, South-East Delhi Municipal Corporation calling for a factual report within two weeks.
Reportedly, the victim, Gurpreet and his grandmother had come back from Punjab and reached near their house by a cycle rikshaw. While his grandmother was busy paying the rikshaw puller, Gurpreet got his hand released and ran towards the house in excitement. There was no electricity at that time and the child could not spot the open manhole and slipped into it.
