Children serving politicians at a function in Bihar; NHRC issues notice to the State Government

The National Human Rights Commission has seen media reports and also received a complaint alleging that at a function organized by the Bhartiya Janta Party in Bihar, minor children, aged 8-12 years, were washing plates and serving meals to the politicians. The Labour Minister of the State was also present at the function. It was alleged that the children were paid a meager amount of Rs. 150/- per day for providing their services in such functions.

The Commission observed that the allegations contained in the complaint, if true, raises a serious issue of violation of human rights of the children and issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar calling for a report in the matter within four weeks.
