The Commission had an interaction with Senior Editors and Columnists of reputed newspapers, weeklies and news agencies on 14 October 2005. The idea of holding such an informal meeting was to exchange views on how to better promote the human rights cause within the country. The Chairperson Dr. Justice A.S. Anand thanked the media for its support saying that this has helped the Commission tremendously in its role as protector of human rights. He also called on them to don a proactive role. The Chairperson briefed the media on the functioning of NHRC, nature of complaints, the need for amendment in the Protection of Human Rights Act and setting up of vibrant State Human Rights Commissions in all the States.
The invitees used the occasion to express their opinion and gave suggestions on how the NHRC could use their services for highlighting issues of human rights through the media.
