Commission's visit to Odisha, April 9-12
The Full Commission had visited Odisha in 2011 to discuss the full range of human rights issues from the State that come before it. Given the gravity of many of these problems, the Commission decided that a follow up visit was necessary. Member, Satyabrata Pal led the Commission's team for this visit. After holding the open hearing on problems faced by the Scheduled Castes, the team visited the site of the proposed POSCO plant at Jagatsinghpur, did surprise checks on health facilities in Dhenkanal and Cuttack Districts, and had a detailed exchange of views with NGOs.
The issues raised at the hearing in Puri, and in the meeting with members of civil society in Bhubaneswar on the 9th April, were among those that the Commission's team then took up with the senior officials of the State, who were urged to give these their urgent attention and work for their very early resolution. The Commission will stay engaged with these problems and monitor the implementation of assurances given by the State.
