Corporal punishment to school children

Ashish and 10 other students of class III in a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), primary school were injured when they were beaten by their teacher Rajpal Sharma with a bamboo stick that had a nail protruding from it, according to reports published in newspapers on the 25th March. Taking suo motu cognizance of these reports, the Commission directed the Commissioner, MCD to submit a factual report within four weeks.
On the 17th April, the Commission took suo motu cognizance of another incident of corporal punishment inflicted on an 11 year old student Shanno of
MCD Girls' Primary School, Bawana, Delhi by her teacher. According to media reports, Shanno was made to stand in the sun for more than an hour on the 14th April, 2009 for not completing her home work. She started bleeding from her nose, collapsed and was admitted in the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital in a critical condition. The Commission said that the contents of the reports raised serious issues of human rights violation of the school girl and asked the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Delhi, to send a factual report within four weeks.
