Dalit beaten to death over plucking vegetables in Punjab: NHRC issues notices to the State DGP and DM, Kapurthala

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to Director General of Police, Punjab and District Magistrate, Kapurthala to submit reports within four weeks into the allegations made in a media report that a Dalit man was beaten to death over plucking vegetables in District Kapurthala, Punjab.
Allegedly, Joginder Singh, a farm labourer and r/o Kokalpur in District Kapurthala had gone to bring fodder for the cattle. After collecting grass, he plucked some vegetables from the fields owned by Balbir Singh. Seeing this, Amrik Singh, S/o Balbir Singh thrashed him severely resulting in his death.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the deceased.
The news clipping was forwarded to the Commission by an NGO.
