Dalit forced to study in a missionary school in Tamil Nadu: NHRC issues notice to the State Government

New Delhi, August 29th, 2012

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu seeking report within four weeks into the allegations that children of Dalit families in Kurayur village near Kalligudi in Madurai district of the State have been barred from admission to the Government Middle School in the village by the dominant Hindu Caste.

Reportedly, they are forced to study at a missionary-run government aided school on the border of the village. The Commission has taken cognizance of the issue on the basis of a media report forwarded by a complainant.

Allegedly, the school officials, who have been working in the Government Middle School since early 1990, said that they did not recall even a single Dalit student ever studying in the village school.
