DEBATE AND PAINTING COMPETITIONS

The Commission organized annual debate competition among personnel of paramilitary forces in Hindi and English language. The topic for the year 2008 was "Terrorism and Militancy in the Country can be Tackled Effectively by Observing Human Rights". The debate was initially conducted at eight zonal level and the semi-final and final rounds were conducted in New Delhi. The final round was held on 20th November, 2008 at SCOPE Convention Centre, New Delhi. This year's responsibility to host the semi-final and final round was entrusted to the Central Reserve Police Force. The Chairperson, NHRC, Mr. Justice S. Rajendra Babu was the Chief Guest at the function organized to hold the final round. For debate in Hindi, Mr. S.K. Sajwan of S.S.B. won the First Prize. The Second Prize went to Mr. Hawaldar Singh of C.R.P.F., the Third Prize went to Ms. Aparna Pant of S.S.B. and the Consolation Prize was given to Mr. J.K. Pandey of B.S.F. .For debate in English, Mr. Sumahan Ghosh of B.S.F won the First Prize. The Second Prize went to Ms. Aprana of C.R.P.F., the Third Prize went to Mr. Anand Konwar of Assam Rifles and the Consolation Prize was given to Mr. T.K. Murali Krishnan.
The Commission in collaboration with Jesus and Mary College, University of Delhi organized an inter-college debate competition. The topic was "Naxalites are not terrorists but products of state apathy towards marginalized communities". The final round was held on 21st November, 2008 at Jesus and Mary College. The team of Mr. Anuroop Chravarti and Ms. Anshul Verma of St. Stephen College, Delhi won the First Prize. The Second Prize went to Ms. Sonal Sharma and Mr. Sumit Shekhar of Kirori Mal College, Delhi. The Third Prize went to Ms. Urvashi and Ms. Dolly Arora of Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi and the Best Interjectors Prize went to the team of Ms. Aukampa from DCAC and Mr. Sumit Shekhar Pandey from Kirori Mal College.
Like previous years the Commission also organized on the spot mass painting competition on 16th November, 2008 in association with National Bal Bhawan for Children of different age groups. About 700 children were invited to the Bal Bhawan to paint on the theme of "Dignity and Justice for all of Us".
