Delhi Police get training in Human Rights

Nearly 40 Delhi police officers underwent training in Human Rights Investigation, Skills and Custody Management in a 3-day programme conducted by the National Human Rights Commission at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Delhi from 3 - 5 March 2004. The training programme aimed at promoting among the law enforcement officers, better understanding and knowledge of human rights culture, practices, skills, attitudes and ethos in the context of various international instruments, treaties, the Indian Constitution and legal framework. The programme saw the participation of police personnel of the rank of SHO, Additional SHO and their supervisory ACPs with adequate representation of women police officers. Inaugurating the programme, NHRC Member Justice Shri Y. Bhaskar Rao highlighted the important role played by police in upholding the rule of law and as protector of human rights. He suggested a revamp of the criminal justice system for speedy trial.
The Commission has since its inception always accorded high priority to training, orientation and sensitization of police personnel on issues concerning human rights. It believes that training increases the capacity of the police to react to situations of stress and provocation with greater respect for the rights of those involved and helps in the long run, enhance the image of the police as a peoples' friendly force.
