Diseases in Jaduguda due to radiation

Media carried a report on the 25th September, 2010, alleging that radiation and spilling over of uranium in the area neighbouring Jaduguda, Jharkhand, is causing disease, deformity and death in the area. The children are born with deformity and women are not able to conceive. The report further alleged that this situation has risen due to apathy of government authorities, lack of scientific management of uranium, and little regard for pollution and radiation. The Commission on the 28th September, 2010, observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise serious issue of human rights violation of the people belonging to Jaduguda area and issued notices to the Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India and the Chief Secretary, Government of Jharkhand, calling for a report in the matter.
