Dr. Justice A.S. Anand demits office as Chairperson NHRC

Dr. Justice A.S.Anand laid down the office of the Chairperson, NHRC on 31.10.2006 on attaining the age of 70 years. He had joined the Commission on 17th February, 2003 and was its fourth Chairperson.

Justice Anand has been the Chief Justice of India from 10.10.1998 to 31.10.2001. As per the Protection of Human Rights Act, only a former Chief Justice of India is eligible to be the Chairperson of NHRC.

Hon'ble Members, Officers and staff of the Commission bade an emotional farewell to Justice Anand at a function organized in the Commission on 31.10.2006. Speaking on the occasion Justice Shivaraj V.Patil, Member, Shri R.K.Bhargava, Secretary General, Shri Damodar Sarangi, DG(I) and other officers and staff of the Commission recalled the guidance provided by Justice Anand in fulfilling the Commission's mandate. The speakers highlighted some of the newer initiatives of the Commission, and the important recommendations and directions given by the Commission during his tenure, on a range of human rights issues, encompassing both civil and political rights and the economic, social and cultural rights. The speakers particularly mentioned the Commission's actions concerning Punjab Mass Cremation case, Best Bakery case, and its initiatives on Right to Food, Right to Health, Corruption as a human rights issue etc.

Justice A.S. Anand said on the occasion that for him it has been a fulfilling tenure as Chairperson of the Commission. He thanked his colleagues in the Commission and the officers and staff for their sincere cooperation in his efforts to make the NHRC more useful for the better protection and promotion of human rights in the country.
