Five lakh rupees interim relief in a case of an innocent person in Jail for 35 years in Rajasthan

The Commission has recommended that the Rajasthan Government pay five lakh rupees to an under trial prisoner Prabhunath, s/o Dashrath resident of Basti, Uttar Pradesh, who was arrested by Rajasthan Police in district Sriganganagar near Indo-Pak Border on 14th May, 1974 under Section 3/6 of the Indian Passport Act. Subsequently on 31st March, 1975 Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srikaranpur passed an order for his release which was not implemented. The Commission on consideration of reports found that Prabhunath was put behind the bars for no fault of his for such a long period, which may have mentally affected the person over the years. The Commission took up the case on the basis of suo motu cognizance of media reports.
