Girl abducted and rescued from brothel alleges assault at a police station in Maharashtra; NHRC issues notices to State DGP and SP Ahmednagar

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that a girl and her fiancé were hit by a senior police officer in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra with a belt when they went to register an FIR about her abduction and dumping at a brothel from where she was rescued on 5th January, 2013. Allegedly, the police officer claimed that they were trying to register a fake case.


According to the media report dated 12th January, 2013 forwarded by a complainant, the girl, aged 18 years, was kidnapped by four unidentified persons including a woman from Ahmednagar on 3rd January, 2013, when her fiancé had gone to the washroom. She was allegedly dumped at a prostitution den in Dhule and beaten by brothel keepers till her rescue on 5th January, 2013. The press report has also mentioned that the Ahmednagar police finally registered case at Tofkhana Police Station on 10th January, 2013.


The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of human rights. Notices have been issued to the DGP, Maharashtra and SP, Ahmednagar to submit reports in the matter within four weeks. They are also directed to inform as to why the FIR was not registered immediately after rescuing the victim on 5th January, 2013.
