Human Rights Awareness Programme in Hathras

Shri A.K. Parashar, Joint Registrar (Law) represented the NHRC at a Human Rights Awareness Programme organised by an NGO, Human Rights Association of India in Hathras, UP, on the 12th September, 2013. Inaugurating it, he spoke about the importance of human rights and Fundamental Duties as enshrined in the Constitution.

He also explained the functions of the Commission and said that it neither provides affiliation to the NGOs nor appoints any members. The Chairperson and Members of the Commission are appointed by the President on recommendations of a Committee headed by the Prime Minister and comprising Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Speaker, Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition in both the Houses of Parliament and the Union Home Minister.

On the occasion, some speakers said that the UP State Human Rights Commission has not been able to effectively address complaints and hence, the NHRC should not forward these to it. They also said that the Human Rights Courts in the State were non-functional.
