Human Rights Implication of the 26 December 2004 'Tsunami'

The Human Rights Implication of the Tsunami and the need for co-ordinated rehabilitation of the victims was discussed by the international community at a meeting held in Bangkok on 4 March 2005 where the Joint Secretary, Smt. Aruna Sharma, represented the National Human Rights Commission, India. In her speech, Smt. Sharma stressed on the need to involve all stakeholders in bringing about a speedy and effective rehabilitation. The challenge, she said, is to ensure better infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, eco-friendly rehabilitation and protection from future disasters as well as to ensure protection of continued livelihoods and social networks. She observed that the rehabilitation process if done with synergy can really help to revive the lives of those most affected by the disaster and to restore their most vital support in this time of post disaster trauma.
