Hunger forces woman to sell son; Commission takes suo-motu cognizance

The reported incident of a woman in Bihar being allegedly forced to sell her son on account of hunger and debt has prompted the Commission to call for a report from the Chief Secretary of Bihar and District Magistrate, Vaishali, Bihar.
Taking suo-motu cognizance of the incident, which was reported, by a section of the media on 14 September 2004, the Commission gave 4 weeks time for the comments to be submitted.
It was reported that after the recent death of her two-year-old child Manish, Dharani decided to save her two-month-old baby boy and the rest of her family. She had reportedly left her home with the child but returned without him to clear Rs. 5,000/- of the family debt after having sold the child for Rs.6,000/-.
