Illegal detention of a woman passenger in Tamil Nadu and Kerala


The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Secretaries of Union Ministries of External Affairs and Home Affairs, Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police, Government of Kerala and Tamil Nadu to submit a detailed report in a case of proven mistaken identity leading to harassment of a woman passenger by Immigration authorities. It has asked the concerned authorities to explain why it should not recommend payment of monetary relief to the victim and disciplinary action against the erring officials.
The complainant, Ms. Sarah Thomas had alleged that on the 29th October, 2014, she was illegally detained and subjected to mental and physical torture because of the negligence and procedural irregularities by the Immigration authorities at Chennai Airport and subsequently by the Tamil Nadu and Kerala police.
