Taking suo-motu cognizance of an incident of a Dalit youth being set ablaze in Uttar Pradesh, the Commission has directed the SSP, Varanasi to send a factual report on the matter within two weeks.
The incident was reported in a national daily on 3 November 2004 under the caption "Dalit set ablaze". It stated that 17 year old Rahul Ram, a physically challenged dalit youth was burnt alive when some unidentified assailants set ablaze his house in Bakhara village in adjoining Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh.
