In correct names deprive genuine pensioners' their monthly dues in Haryana: NHRC issues notice to the State Government (08.03.2016)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that in Sonepat district of Haryana, a number of elderly people, including widows and physically challenged, are being deprived of monthly pension due to incorrect names registered in the list of the Social Welfare Department. The beneficiaries are running from pillar to post to get their names corrected in the government records but to no avail.
The Commission has observed that elderly person widows, physically challenged and elderly persons need special care. The contents of the Press report, if true, raises serious issue of violation of human rights. Accordingly, it has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana calling for a report in the matter within four weeks
According to the media report carried on the 2nd March, 2016, the beneficiaries of the pension scheme have approached the office of Social Welfare Department in Sonepat to get their names corrected. They submitted repeated affidavits to this effect as required. Still they did not receive pension and when they approached the officers in the Social Welfare Department, they were told that their affidavits were misplaced. Sometimes, the officers, turn them away saying that the server is down. Having no option, they again go for another affidavit which consumes lot of time and energy. Many of them have said that in old age, it becomes very difficult for them to run like this. Therefore, the government must make arrangements to get their names properly registered in the beneficiaries list in their respective villages.
