Infant deaths in Hyderabad hospital: Comments sought from AP Government

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of a media report, which appeared in a Telugu daily dated 11 August 2004 alleging that a number of children had died in a hospital at Hyderabad.
The newspaper reported that 227 children of which 163 were infants had died at the Niloufer hospital in the month of June while in July, 274 children of which 188 were infants had died.
Observing that if the contents of the report are true, then it raises issue of violation of human rights, the Chairperson of the NHRC, Dr. Justice A.S. Anand has directed that a copy of the news story be sent to the Secretary, Health, Government of Andhra Pradesh and Medical Superintendent, Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad for looking into the allegations and submit their comments within three weeks.
