Infant dies of pneumonia after a demolition party confiscates clothes in Mumbai: NHRC issues notice to the Maharashtra Govt.

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a three-month-old boy died due to pneumonia as his parents could not provide for clothes and blankets to cover him for two consecutive days after a demolition drive during which the raiding party confiscated clothes and blankets of evicted families in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The demolition drive was conducted last week at Jay Ambe Nagar, Mankhurd Ghatkopar link road in the city to remove about 25 families who were living in the temporary sheds.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. A notice has been issued to the Chief Secretary, Govt. of Maharashtra, calling for a report within four weeks.

The media report was forwarded by a human rights activist.
