isit to Dang District
VAnother team of NHRC visited Dang District of Gujarat. The team was led by NHRC, Member, Mr. Justice B.C. Patel and comprized Special Rapporteur, Mr. R.K. Bhargava, Director (Research), Mr. Y.S.R. Murthy and Research Officer, Ms. Tapaswinee Mohanty. The team during its stay in the district from 10th to 12th February, 2009 organized a sensitization workshop on human rights for district and field level authorities, NGOs, elected representatives of the people, media pesons etc. and made field visits to some schools, Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Anganvadi Centres, Gram Panchayat Offices, Police Lockups, Fair Price Shops etc. The school drop out rate is very high in the district due to migration of the parents to nearby cities in search of employment. The water scarcity emerged as one the major problems.
The detailed recommendations in connection with all the 28 selected districts will be finalized in due course of time after the completion of the visits. The Commission has so far visited 9 Districts which include Chamba in Himachal Pradesh, Ambala in Haryana, North Sikkim in Sikkim, Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, Dhalai in Tripura, South Garo Hills in Meghalaya and Dang in Gujarat. The next visit is schedule for South Goa district in Goa.
