JS, NHRC attends All India Conference of Correctional Administrators

Shri A.K. Shrivastava, Joint Secretary, represented the Commission both as a speaker and a session Chairman at the All India Conference of Correctional Administrators organised by Ministry of Home Affairs from 15th to 16th May, 2013 in New Delhi. Shri P.D. Prasad, SSP, also accompanied. The event was inaugurated by the Home Minister in the presence of Home Secretary.
Addressing the first technical session, Shri Shrivastava raised some basic issues from the NHRC perspective and highlighted the role of the Commission, right since 1993, in improving the conditions in various jails. Later, delivering his opening remarks as Chairman of the Session-III on 'Professional Development and Well-Being of the Prison Staff', he dwelt upon expeditious disposal of undertrial cases, improvement of vocational training of inmates & professional skills of staff, promotion of best practices in prison management, sharing of experiences and improvement in physical environment. Shri P.D. Prasad, SSP, gave practical suggestions on 'Introduction of Community Service Sentence for Petty Offenders to ease congestion in jails'.
