After NHRC team's visit to the Union Territory of Lakshadweep in the month of April, 2013 and the specific suggestions given to the concerned authorities for improvement in the facilities, the Commission has been informed by the concerned authorities in person that keeping in view the convenience of the disabled persons, all the Administrative Offices have been shifted to the ground floor. Disability certificate were being issued expeditiously but in the absence of qualified persons only 42 out of 117 sanctioned posts in Group 'C' and Group 'D' were filled. The Commission was also informed about the proposal to grant marriage allowance amounting to Rs. 30 thousand to persons with disability below the poverty line. The UT Administration, on the Commission's suggestions, had issued orders for providing round-the-clock services of 14 ambulances on each island. Helicopter services were also being made available, free of cost, for patients below the poverty line.
The Blood Bank is fully equipped and further action was being taken to improve the services. However, the shortage of doctors in the Island continued to be a concern. The Commission has advised the UT Administration to recruit retired doctors from Army and approach Army Medical Corps and the Kerala Government in the Matter. There were no prisoners in the Jail, however, the Sup-erintendent of Police has undertaken to submit a complete report in respect of different type of cases, their outcome and progress in Courts.
