MEETING OF STATUTORY FULL COMMISSION
A meeting of the Statutory Full Commission was held in NHRC on the 16th March, 2010. The meeting was chaired by NHRC Acting Chairperson, Mr. Justice G.P. Mathur and attended by Members, Mr. Justice B.C. Patel, Mr. P.C. Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women, Dr. Girija Vyas, Vice-Chairperson, National Commission for Minorities, Dr. H.T. Sangliana, Member, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, Mr. Tsering Samphel and Member, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Ms. Sandhya Bajaj as a special invitee.
The meeting discussed concept note on Right to Education prepared by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Justice Mathur said that given the doubts over the practicality of some of the points, the matter needs to be discussed with the Ministry of Human Resources Development.
Proposed amendments in Dowry Prohibition Act and Domestic Violence Act was also discussed. Dr. Girija Vyas said that these will provide wider protection and immediate relief to the women.
NHRC Member, Mr. P.C. Sharma, with specific reference to the issue of female foeticide, said that some steps need to be taken to stop telecasting of such serials where cruelty towards women and children is being shown. Dr. Girija Vyas said that NCW has written to the Central Government on the issue, and she is also taking up the matter with the Prime Minister.
Mr. Tsering Samphel mentioned a case wherein sixteen students of Sanskrit University Varanasi had to go to an examination centre at far away Leh where they became victim of frost bite, which led to amputation of the toes of some of them. Justice Mathur asked him to give the details of the matter to enable NHRC to take it up with the concerned University.
