Member NHRC visits Andhra Pradesh

Justice Dr. K. Ramaswamy toured the State of Andhra Pradesh from 3 – 5 January 2000. He visited the institutions run by M.V. Foundation in Rangareddy District of Andhra Pradesh, which conducts programmes for educating the children of disadvantaged sections of society. The Member was impressed by the good work done by the Foundation which inculcates a spirit of education, discipline and dedication among the children of the weaker sections, in particular the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. Poor children from other castes have also been included in the programmes.

The Member also attended a meeting of the NGO - `Juvenile Rights Forum’. The NGO brought to his notice serious lapses in the management of the juvenile homes, inhuman treatment being meted out to the children, deficiency in the supply of diet, ill-treatment and handcuffing of children etc. He was also informed that the juvenile home in Hyderabad is housed in Chanchalgoda Central Jail itself. A prison like atmosphere prevails in the home. The Member received a complaint for redressal from the NGO.
