Message by Mr. Justice H.L. Dattu, Chairperson, NHRC
''I ndia, as the largest democracy of the world, also has its share of problems, unique to its diverse socio, cultural, economic and political realities. Governments elected by the people and various constitutional and statutory institutions in this democracy are under an obligation to address the problems and issues affecting the people. But we need to understand that the genesis of most of the problems also lies in the actions, inactions and, or omissions of people themselves. A judicious temperament and an objective approach to dealing with people and situations will automatically lead to balanced decisions and actions, by and large, acceptable to all. Precedence, rules and regulations would be worth if, quoted only to supplement the constructive approach to solving the problems, not to create them. We may also call this a positive and humane approach to dealing with issues in life. The essence of life lies in "live and let live", by rightful means and intentions to create an ethos and culture of respect to one and all.''
