Message of NHRC Chairperson, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, on the eve of Human Rights Day - 2013
Press Release
New Delhi, 9th December, 2013
"Fellow citizens, greetings to you all on the eve of Human Rights Day, which is tomorrow - the 10th December. This is a solemn occasion to take a pledge that each one of us will stand-up for the promotion and protection of human rights. And, the best way forward is to start recognizing the mutual co-existence of each other and ensure that we will not be party to any such action which creates problems for others, undermining their rights to life, liberty, dignity and equality. Ours is a big and sovereign nation, having its own problems and challenges, which we have been able to sail through with the help of democratic principles, guided by our Constitution. Let us not, in any way, succumb to any pressure or use of such words or expressions that may seek to create divisions in our society leading to a situation of rights violation. India, as a nation, has believed in the theory and practice of "Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam", i.e., the world is one family and also in the concept
of "Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah", i.e., let there be happiness for all. These age-old philosophies of our proud nation have been time-tested principles that respect and celebrate human life and human rights. Let us resolve to help maintain such a value-based society to set an example in the world. And what a better occasion than Human Rights Day can be to orient ourselves towards achieving this goal………Jai Hind."
