Minors from Chhattisgarh working as bonded labourers in Jammu; NHRC orders its own spot enquiry

The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of a complaint that more than 42 people including minor Adivasi girls from Janjgir Champa, Chhattisgarh are working as bonded labourers at two brick kiln factories in District Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir. The Commission has asked its Director General (Investigation) to depute a team for an on the spot enquiry and submit a report expeditiously in the matter.
The complainant has alleged that the two brick kilns having bonded labourers are located at village Agra Chowk and Purab Pana in Tehsil Nawanshahr. The brick kiln owners do not pay them full wages and torture them. They are also threatened that they would be thrown into the chimneys. He has expressed apprehension that these bonded labourers are victims of human trafficking and have been sold by some agents to brick kiln owners. He has requested Commission's intervention in the matter.
