Suraj Pal Tiwari, son of Ram Asarey Tiwari, was imprisoned on the 15th January, 2005 in a criminal case in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. He suffered from asthma and was given treatment in the jail and District Hospital, Faizabad. However, on the 11th April, 2007 he died during the treatment. The magisterial inquiry report observed that the detainee was not provided timely medical treatment, and as a result he died. The Commission recommended Rupees one lakh as monetary relief to the next of the kin of the deceased. The Commission also asked for a compliance report from the U.P. Government alongwith the report on the action taken against errant prison staff.
